What is BAC water?
Bacteriostatic water is sterile water with a small amount of benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. It is the standard diluent researchers use to prepare lyophilized research peptides.
A typical lyophilized peptide arrives as a fine white powder in a sealed vial. To work with it, the researcher draws bacteriostatic water into a syringe, injects it into the peptide vial, and the powder dissolves into a clear solution. The 0.9% benzyl alcohol in BAC water prevents bacterial growth, so once a vial is opened it remains usable for up to 28 days at refrigerated temperature.
Plain sterile water can also dissolve peptides, but it does not inhibit microbial growth. That is why every peptide preparation protocols you will find specifies bacteriostatic water unless the protocol is for single-use within minutes of mixing.

What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?
Both are sterile, but bacteriostatic water also contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The preservative prevents bacterial growth in the vial after the first puncture, which extends usable life to 28 days at refrigerated temperature. Plain sterile water has no preservative and must be used immediately after opening.
How much BAC water do I need per peptide vial?
It depends on the peptide and the concentration the researcher needs. Common preparation ratios are 1 mL or 2 mL of BAC water per 10 mg vial of peptide. A preparation calculator helps make this calculation simple.
How long does opened BAC water last?
28 days after the first puncture if stored refrigerated. The benzyl alcohol preservative loses effectiveness over time, so after 28 days the vial should be discarded.
